When I am serving in the Renovation Advisor capacity, my goal is to help ensure that the interiors of your project meet your functional, aesthetic, and financial goals.

Renovation Advisor

Even a small renovation involves hundreds or even thousands of decisions, each of which should align with the client’s ideal architectural and design concepts. At whatever stage I am brought into the process, I focus on serving the needs and goals of the client, often acting as the client’s voice with other members of the renovation team to ensure that the final execution aligns with the client’s vision.

The first step in planning a renovation is to define success. After one to three meetings, I develop a comprehensive document, categorized by each space in your home, outlining in detail exactly what you want to achieve within each space. These goals will be both functional and aesthetic, and they are not tied to any architectural idea at this stage. The second step involves determining the best approach regarding the execution of the project, and I provide guidance and direction regarding whether the “architect / contractor” model or the “design / build” model may be a better fit for your style and project. Finally, the third step involves a realistic assessment of the budget, always returning to the key questions of “what is the true total budget?” and “what does a complete project involve, from your perspective?”

Renovation Planning is ideal for clients who are considering or are in the early planning stage of a renovation and want to be sure that the results of the renovation deliver the expected experience.

Phase A: RENOVATION PLANNING

As an advisor, my next step is a review of the architectural plans, once developed, to help assess if they achieve the requirements for success as outlined in the planning process. In some projects, I may not join the project until this phase; in those situations, we return to the renovation planning stage to ensure that we understand both success and the budget in order to be able to assess the plans thoroughly. I provide direct feedback and, when relevant, make adjustments and note ideas to scale directly on the plans. At this stage, it is also critical to develop the initial furniture plan in order to ensure a successful experience after the renovation is complete. Without this plan, a homeowner cannot determine if the renovation will create the desired experience in each space of a home. Finally, before the end of this phase, I provide details regarding appropriate renovation allowances, and a client has committed to a final budget with an understanding of what that budget may achieve.

Architectural Review builds on Renovation Planning and is ideal for clients who understand the value of an interiors–focused professional on the renovation team.

Phase B: ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW

For many people, the materials selection process is both an exciting and an overwhelming period of a renovation. My role is to curate selections in order to present options that align with the architectural and design concepts, as well as continuing to help clients understand the budget in terms of how to spend wisely.

Hard Materials Selection is most often combined with the other renovation advisor design services. However, it can also be ideal for clients who have permitted plans in hand and then realize that they would like a partner in making final selections.

Phase C: HARD MATERIALS SELECTION
